Weekend Getaway: Miami Beach

Playlist for the road trip-

Day 1

The Local -craft beer brunch

Coral Gables has its share of bars, but the Local is the ultimate neighborhood spot for craft beer, thanks to 18 taps and more than 20 different bottles and cans that change seasonally. Expect frequent tap takeovers and special releases, like Bell’s Hopslam, which only surfaces once a year, and other rare ales. And because beer pairs so beautifully with food, the restaurant hosts a monthly brew-paired brunch series, Roast and Toast, with various guest breweries.

Urbanica The Meridian Hotel -late afternoon

URBANICA The Meridian Hotel is located in the upscale South of Fifth neighborhood in Miami Beach. It aims to create a boutique hotel experience that speaks to the savvy & sophisticated world traveller.

Matador Room– Dinner

Inspired by its rich history and 1950s glamour, world-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has reinvented the iconic Matador Room with reimagined menus that offer his interpretation of Caribbean, Spanish, and Latin and South American cuisines.  Seasonal menus are composed of small and large plates that embrace the freshest, locally sourced, seasonal produce. The space’s original chandelier has been restored and is suspended over the sunken oval dining room that is reminiscent of the glamorous supper clubs of the 1940s and 50s.

Day 2

Salty Donut– Breakfast

The Salty Donut is an Artisanal Donut Shop & Coffee Bar focused on chef-made, small-batch craft donuts using nothing but the highest quality ingredients and making EVERYTHING in house! We also have an incredibly unique coffee program, featuring rotating coffees with interesting flavor profiles, crafted by some of the best baristas around.

Explore Wynwood

Unique outdoor destination featuring huge, colorful street murals by artists from around the globe.

Mandolin Aegean Bistro – Lunch

Mandolin Aegean Bistro is dedicated to using seasonal ingredients, local purveyors and growers, freshly caught fish and farmed meats. The menu covers a great selection of vegetarian options and our food is made with the highest quality extra virgin Greek olive oil and authentic imported ingredients from Greece and Turkey. All of our bread and pastries are baked in house. We also offer a selection of regional specialties that are seasonal dishes that change daily. Old world style wines dominate the wine list as it perfectly pairs with our food at Mandolin.

Choose your own adventure-Cocktail Hour

Option 1- Sugar

Inspired by our Chinese and Hong Kong roots, Sugar brings an Asian-influenced restaurant & bar experience to the heart of Miami’s Brickell district. Located on the 40th floor rooftop of the EAST, Miami Hotel at Brickell City Centre, a lush garden setting serves as an untraditional hideaway located high in the sky above urban downtown Miami. Our menu combines a variety of culinary heritages; offering authentic Asian flavors, signature cocktails and family style service. A curated mix of sounds by local and international DJs create a fun and laid-back atmosphere, accentuated by panoramic views of the Miami skyline.

Option 2- Pawn Broker

Hidden in the depths of Miami’s towering financial district, at first glance only a subtle echo in the warm skies, once discovered though, now that’s when it all begins …

You’ll share a ‘cheers’ with the art dealer from Stockholm, in town to organize an exhibit in Wynwood. Sip on a Pawn Broker classic cocktail with the Documentary Director from New York, in town every other week for his Discovery Channel documentary. Or be out on the decadent terrace, gazing at the beauty of the sun setting, with the Italian artist who sells her goods in Miami’s Design District.

Autumn inspired cheese balls

In honor of the fall season and my obsession with cheese, I have made a party perfect version of the classic cheese ball. I can only hope your tastebuds scream out “AMAZEBALLS” while you eat these on your favorite veggies, fruits and crackers. 😉

Ingredients

8 ounce package extra sharp cheddar cheese- finely shredded

8 ounce package Neufchatel cheese

2 tablespoons diced (jar) pimiento, rinsed, drained, patted dry

2 tablespoons tomato jam

1 tablespoon almond milk

1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/4 teaspoon cajun style spice blend

1 cup chopped pecans

Whole rosemary sprigs

Directions
In a large bowl combine cheddar and cream cheese; let stand until room temperature (about 45 minutes). Add pimientos, tomato jam, almond milk, Worcestershire and spices. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until almost smooth.
Cover and chill mixture 2 hours or overnight. Divide into 3 portions; on waxed paper shape into balls. Cover and chill. Roll in chopped pecans and top with rosemary sprigs just before serving.

Serve with apple slices, crackers and toasted baguette slices.

Enjoy!

coconut curry tofu wrap

One of my favorite places to eat in Winter Park is Ethos Vegan Kitchen. I have a love fest with the curry wrap every time I order it. I scoured the interwebs to get all the inspiration for my recipe below. For those of you who aren’t able to dine in locally, I hope you find this tasty and simple wrap delicious. It will totally rock your face off with flavor and requires little time to prepare. I served mine with Treeline nut cheese and herbed rice crackers. Enjoy and devour!

    Ingredients:

  • spinach tortilla style wrap
  • 2 stalks celery, sliced
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 handful of mixed greens (baby romaine works well)
  • 1 package baked tofu, cubed (I used Wildwood Organic-Aloha flavor)
  • 1-2 tablespoons of Bragg’s or tamari
  • unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • cinnamon
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1/2 cup Veganaise

Coat the bottom of a pan with Bragg’s, then add tofu and cook over medium heat, stirring until tofu is coated and warmed. Remove from heat and let cool.

Place veganaise, cinnamon, salt, curry and coconut in a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly and add tofu then refrigerate until chilled.

Arrange tortillas in a single layer. Place tofu mixture down the center of each tortilla. Top with mixed greens, celery and raisins then roll up tortillas burrito-style. Cut crosswise and serve immediately or refrigerate in sealed storage container until ready to eat!

Support clean water + inspired nail art

In honor of Aveda Earth Month 2015, I have created a nail design that blends several blue hues. The featured base color is CND Vinylux in Creekside. I layered with CND Vinylux  in Indigo Frock and Maybelline Color Show in Shock Wave.

Using a few custom cut makeup brushes I had lying around and placing drops of polish on aluminum foil….it was super simple to create this wispy look by layering the shades over the dry base color.
